why they say the president's advisors had to stage an intervention in last year's campaign and why there were pitfalls that led to mitt romney and a running mate with chris christie as a running mate. they're the one that wrote game change. we'll hear from them in their first interview. >> let's get right to today's top stories. new information about the shooter in the deadly attack at los angeles airport. miguel almaguer is at l.a.x. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. this is where it all happened inside terminal three. police say the suspect walked through the front door with a rifle and five magazine clips and opened fire. 23-year-old paul ciancia walked inside the terminal with this assault rifle, plenty of ammo, a plan to kill and a note for police. >> in that note, he indicated

his anger and his malice, i would say, toward the tsa officers. >> reporter: according to a federal criminal complaint, ciancia fired multiple rounds at point blank range at officer gerardo hernandez. investigators said ciancia proceeded up an escalator, but when hernandez appeared to move, he returned to shoot him again. police say he shoots tony grigsby and brian ludmer. once he was past security, police say he made his way down the long corridor. according to some reports, he went up to witnesses and said tsa. they shook their heads no and he kept going. ciancia was seen shooting several times.

we now know ciancia lived in los angeles for over a year. law enforcement sources tell nbc news he legally purchased two gun from a target range not far from his home. in a moment, ciancia lashes out at the tsa saying his constitutional rights were violated and a mention of nwo which warns of a totalitarian one-world government. he sent a message to his family back in new jersey just before the rampage. his father was so worried, he asked to call l.a. authorities. >> he called my cell phone back. he said to me that i can't believe what i'm saying on tv. is this true? is this my son involved in the shooting? my reply to him was i heard the same thing, paul. i have not confirmed anything. >> reporter: that confirmation

would come later for the family of tsa agent hernandez. >> i am truly devastated. we are all heart broken and we will miss him dearly. >> reporter: this morning, ciancia is in critical condition. he has been unable to respond to investigators because of his medical condition. police say the 23-year-old sent his brother and sister a text message saying he was going to commit suicide shortly before the shooting. he could face the death penalty. matt. >> miguel almaguer in los angeles. miguel, thank you. a match up in the 2016 presidential election. two possible contenders. chris christie and hillary clinton are getting more attention. kelly o'donnell has more. >> reporter: this spot is the nutley diner. it is one of several spots christ see will make today.

he says that the bigger the win tomorrow the better for his future possibilities. never bashful. governor chris christie thinks new jersey can send a message. >> we need to show the republican party and america that we can win again and guess where they will be watching on tuesday night to see if we win? right here in new jersey. they will be watching us. >> reporter: cruising toward re-election on a week-long bus tour, the destination may ultimately be the 2016 presidential race. voters bring it up at every stop. christie both relishes the speculation and tries to tamp it down. >> i will see what the future will be. i think people don't plan politics years ahead. >> reporter: but 2016 predictions are irresistible.

even more mitt romney on "meet the press." >> that is the kind of popularity and the track record the republican party needs if we take back the white house. >> reporter: the current occupant, president obama, jumped into one race this cycle. campaigning to help terry mcauliffe. the democrat's next presidential contend e contender? hillary clinton was not in iowa. she got attention when senator chuck schumer made this call. >> 2016 is hillary's time. run, hillary! run. if you run, you'll win and we'll all win. >> reporter: and president obama did not campaign for the democrat running against chris christie. she wanted more democrats to help her out. savannah, people are looking beyond tomorrow to the irresistible 2016.

back to you. >> kelly o'donnell, thank you. we have the new book "double down" which is causing controversy. we have mark halperin and john heilemann with us both. you guys reveal he had another terrible performance behind the scenes so badly that his advisers thought we might lose this election. >> he did 48 hours before the debate at hofstra. his disdain for romney. he could not figure out how to deal with that. at the same time, the contempt for the theater of politics. it got mixed up together. it was the horrible performance that left him stymied about how they fix it before the debate which was crucial for the re-election.

>> they staged an intervention, mark. at one point, the president said i don't know if i can do this. >> one of the most dramatic moments for "double down." weeks before the presidential election and two days before a debate, his aides say we have to go to him and tell him things have to change. they ended up having a conversation which was emotional and they changed his debate prep. they said he had to be fast. he had to not be slow in the first debate. talk fast and one liners. not the thoughtful disposition that barack obama, the former law professor wants. >> somebody told you you will never get this story. what did you say? >> they said this thing happened at the debate prep before hofstra. it is a black box you will never get inside that box. >> that encourages people like you. let's move on to christie. the vetting team that looked at the v.p. candidate saw so many

land mines which was a non starter. >> governor christie's run for office. there is nothing like the scrutiny you get if you are thinking about the ticket. romney was terrified. he picked someone and it blew up. he wanted no controversy. they found a lot of it. that was the reason that governor romney said as much as i need a street fighter, too much risk. >> these guys talked to low level staffers. you are just trying to sell books, john. >> we talked to high level staffers and everybody involved. we had an extraordinary thing. we quote from the vetting report. line-by-line what romney's vetters had to say about chris christie. >> that suggests somebody in romney's world they don't mind. we heard romney giving an "a" plus record card to christie.

>> they can have complex relationships. romney and christie have a great relationship. personally they do. it is also true that their aides do have a bit of tension. >> a couple of quick things. you reported that the president's advisers actually considered and poll tested switching hillary clinton for joe biden and making her the v.p. candidate. is this something that president obama knew about? >> we have no idea. what we do know is the very top level of the obama campaign, no the political standing in the poll was so bad, they felt it was a dereliction of duty not to study it. >> one of the most unforgettable moments was clint eastwood and that chair. who's idea was it and how did the advisers react? >> this is something we love to do. at the time, how did clint east

wood get on the stage? mitt romney had dinner it eastwood last year. he decided he wanted him at the convention. eastwood decides at the last minute, everybody is up giving speeches and saying how great romney is. he comes up with a great thing where he talks to the chair. no one in mitt romney's world was happy with it. one was back stage and left governor romney's presence to throw up he was so upset. it was a big night for mitt romney. >> a lot of scoop in the book. it is called "double down." mark and john, thank you. we will send it to natalie following a remarkable story. good morning, everyone. a dramatic rescue on sunday night after a college student was found trapped in a narrow two-foot space between buildings. we have rehema ellis with more on what happened.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. asher vongtau is lucky to be alive after a frightening ordeal this weekend. >> he is lucky to be alive. >> reporter: 19-year-old asher vongtau is recovering this morning after spending more than a day trapped in a tight space between two buildings in lower manhattan. he went missing saturday morning after a fire alarm was pulled. the nyu student fell into the narrow shaft way between the dorm and parking garage on saturday morning. he was discovered by campus security last night. more than 24 hours after a friend saw him. >> he was headed upstairs. we went to security and said you need to go to the roof. >> reporter: fire crews cut through the wall to rescue the man two feet wide. it took two hours to get the student out. this photo shows the aftermath.

it is unclear how he became stuck or how long he was trapped. >> the extent of the injuries are unknown. he is conscious and alive and transported to the nearest hospital. >> reporter: the student is listed in critical, but stable condition and he is talking. officials hope he will soon be able to reveal how this ordeal happened. natalie. >> very lucky young man. rehema ellis, thank you so much. houston texans gary kubiak is recovering after collapsing at sunday's game. he was walking back to the locker room and fell to his knees. he was responsive before taken off the field to the hospital. the general manager said he was lightheaded and dizzy. this comes a day after the denver broncos coach john fox will miss games for a heart procedure. caught on camera. a fire ball in a lighting storm over the weekend in canada.

the dramatic moments were caught on camera. more than 300,000 people lost power in the storm. the video has more than 2 million hits on youtube. a record number of fleet footed runners hit the streets for the new york city marathon. the 26.2 marathon course went through the five boroughs. the marathon was canceled last year because of super storm sandy. two kenyans won the women's and men's. then in the wheelchair division, tatianna mcfadden made it a grand slam. she won marathons in boston and london and chicago and now new york. no one has won four raices in te same year. the next stop, hopefully sochi. >> they are jumping up and down outside. >> great job.

the nine sky divers aboard and one of the pilots all parachuted to safety avoiding burning debris on the way down. the other pilot managed to land the damaged plane at the nearby airport. >> in free fall we could see the burning airplane come apart into three pieces that i could see. >> as sky divers, we live for the excitement but tonight was a little bit over the top. >> reporter: the two planes were flying in a tandem formation when the trailing plane was caught in the lead plane's tale tail wind. causing it to come over the top of it clipping its wings off and sparking a fire ball in the air. >> you hear this loud bang. you see the wing come off and see it on fire. it's right there five feet from you. >> reporter: the wreckage of the lead plane narrowly avoided witnesses on the ground. >> it seemed to us like that could have came right through my

we're back now at 7:41 with a today exclusive with bernard kerik. the former new york city police commissioner is speaking about what he sees as the failure of the prison system and he joins us exclusively live this morning. good morning. it's nice to see you. >> good morning. >> you spoke out on friday after being out of the public eye for three or three and a half years and you talked about your time behind bars and that it opened your eyes. were you nervous about the response you would get to speaking out? >> in a way. people look at me as one of the nation's top law enforcement officers or looked at me that way.

for me to come out and say there's things wrong within the system there's people skeptical and they're concerned about that. >> you have been hearing that over the weekend, haven't you? >> the response has been crazy. major, major response. >> let's listen to some of the things people are saying on twitter. respect for bernie kerik speaking against mandatory minimu minimums. you were raising the issue of our time. but there were other opinions. this one came from samantha zylks. kerik, really? a victim of the system. they're victims of their own personal choices. #consequences. how do you feel about that? >> i don't consider myself a victim of the system. i think the system is flawed. it's not -- it's not about me being a victim of the system. i think the system is flawed. i think we -- the system is supposed to punish.

it's not supposed to ruin personally, professional, financially. it's not supposed to detroy families and the punishment must fit the crime. i was in prison with commercial fishermen that caught too many fish that spent three years in prison and they're not going to be able to work in that industry for the rest of their lives. that's a life sentence. it's not about me being a victim. it's about a system that's broken. >> the very thing that makes you perfectly qualified to talk about this, the fact that you've got this resume in law enforcement. you were nominated to run the department of homeland security and then three years in federal prison, the very thing that gives you this perspective, don't you think it might be what says he lost his right to speak

out. i don't want to listen to him. >> you don have to listen to me. congress has to act. the american people have to be educated. and that's one of the major problems. the american people don't see -- if you don't have personal discourse, if you haven't been a witness to it, you don't get it. you don't understand it. >> how do we get here? i remember 9/11 and the imagines of you walking down at the world trade center and the president coming to down the next couple of days. you were the top cop in this city and a few years later you're serving time in a federal prison. how did it happen? >> it happens and i think one of the things i'll speak out on in due time is how public officials, especially those in politics, those in law enforcement, there wiare things that you have to be aware of, that you have to do and sometimes things you have to

keep track of that you don't realize. >> does people in those positions, yourself included, feel above the law? >> i don't think you feel above the law -- i think you wind up in these positions. you don't focus on the right things. you don't pay attention to the ethical issues that you should. and it's a big problem. particularly when you are scrutinized at that time or later in a way that nobody really gets scrutinized. >> you say these sentences become life sentences because they stick with you for the rest of your life. do you think you'll ever be able to make this a footnote in your life in the opinion of other people? >> it may happen. they are life sentences. and forget me. it's not about me. you cannot sentence people and take their constitutional rights and their civil rights for eternity for a mistake they made at some point in their life. a 21-year-old united states

the things that the start of spring training, we all bought in. we were going to be as i called it a brotherhood, and go out there every single night and play as one team. the tragedies that we faced as a city, and the resilience showing as a city and brought up closer as a city to be brought up as one team, and storybook ending to what happened. you know, it has been amazing, and you know, hey, we are are the world series champions. i look like i'm about 12 right now. >> yeah, you do look different. and it is nice to get some of that off, so the question is shane, and david, this worked so well this year, you get to spring training next year, are you growing them again? >> i will. >> you are? >> i am going to start in the off season so i won't look like, i don't know what my beard is going to be called honestly by the end. >> and everybody has to figure it out from the beginning. >> hey, you guys look good and enjoy the cleanup, an congratulations again on the world championship. i'm a born and raised yankee fan, but i liked what you guys

did this year and i felt great for the city of boston. >> okay. thank you. >> thank you. >> okay. hang with it. >> i'll try. david ortiz and shane victorino. savannah? >> this month is adoption month, and there are children all offdreaming of a home, and we will focus on that cause. >> and when my wife and i don'ted 17 years ago, with we never dreamed of an open adoption, but we met up with a family determined to unite to raise their son. >> he was an adorable and happy baby. he had absolutely huge blue eyes. >> feeling him move the first few times, that was amazing. i just wanted to be responsible, because i had felt so irresponsible. >> being a mother was always a complete lifelong dream.

>> reporter: two mothers, one son, bound by an emotional and unexpected journey in parenting. >> when i was a little girl, i thought that i would just grow up and be a mother, but ours was a much more complicated path. >> reporter: it all began with a let er asking for a very open adoption. >> knowing that you are facing a difficult life decisioning we would welcome the chance to know more about each other. >> i sat on the letter for about three or four weeks before i called them. >> the first time we actually met, leeann asked the question, why do you want to choose an open adoption, and looked at me straight in the face and said, i want to be able to tell him later that i love him. >> reporter: a connection borne from the love of one child. faylen is 12 now and a whiz at

three-pointers, adores soccer, and like most big brothers, gets annoyed by his little sister, and he also knows that more people have his back than most kids do. when i adopted my daughter, open adoption was not invogue, but done fairly secretive in a sense, and what made you decide to go to the more open route? >> well, we were both hesitant to have secrets in a family, and so we tried to figure out how to work as a team. >> faylan was my family, and so i had to pursue that. >> reporter: this adoption in a way not only gave faylan two moms, but it kind of saved the two of you? >> well, she's the person that i think to call just as quickly as i think to call my sister. >> and there is an amazing thing that happens, and it is inexplicable how excited and how much he literally needs her. >> yes, it is amazing. i mean, he is my son.

>> yes. >> but he is your son, too? >> yep. >> reporter: even though theyley 3,000 miles apart. >> you have long arms. >> reporter: mariah and faylan still share life's most precious moments. >> she is really fun to hang around. i really love her. >> reporter: he plays unicorns with you? oh, that is is a good big brother. over the years their family ties have grown stronger, and little tallulah is more than faylan's s sister, because when her maternal aunt became pregnant and unable to have a child, she cop tacted leeann. >> she could not parent another child, and she knew us because of the open adoption, and so she called us. >> how is daddy? >> you like to make silly faces? >> reporter: weekly chat sessions keep tallulah connected with her birth parents and siblings and 11 grandparents and 12 aunts and uncles and 21

cousins, you'd think that it is confusing, but not for faylan. >> he looked at me one day and he said, i have two mothers. i was like, yeah, yeah, you do. he sort of thought about it, and then he went, you know, i love you both. >> oh. and what is amazing is that faylan and tallulah are biological cousins, but as far as they are concerned, they are brother and sister. >> obviously, this situation works very well, but does it get confusing and situations where it is not as smooth? >> well, they have worked through it. it is really amazing in talking with everyone that they cannot imagine doing it any other way. >> that is amazing and a new definition of family. and tomorrow in the series what you need to consider before adopting and then thursday, it is going to be special, because we will be joined by a dozen families as they finalize their

since then he completed race after race and has sprinted right into the record books with the help of a very close friend. >> reporter: he crossed the finish line hours after the winner but jimmy jensen is still first. >> great job. >> reporter: the only person with down syndrome ever to complete new york city's marathon. one of the world's most famous runs. >> mom, i did it. >> reporter: while jensen was joined by more than 50,000 other runners on sunday, for him, there's only one that mattered. >> we're going to be marathon buddies, right? >> that's right. >> reporter: jimmy started running 12 years ago with the help of jennifer davis who he met through the best buddies organization fielding one-on-one relationships between those with intellectual disabilities and those without. neither of them were runners but jimmy had a simple idea. he wanted to do a 5k. together they did that and much more.

since then, jimmy has completed a number of races with jennifer by his side including the l.a. marathon last spring. >> does running make you feel good? >> yeah. >> along the way he lost 69 pounds and gained new self-confidence. >> he would sit in the corner kind of cross legged. jimmy has become so much more outgoing. >> reporter: the pair is inseparable. a personal bond that's so important for jimmy who lived had a group home since he was 8 years old. >> what is it about running that's so bonding for the two of you? >> i think it's a part of getting outside, being a part of the community. having a goal and reaching it. >> reporter: but reaching the goal of crossing the finish line in new york is about more than just jimmy. >> it's incredible for the movement and people with

because of the pacifier. >> so clearly there's a cutoff age. you have a daughter who is 6 and a son who is 2. so the age of 2 is the cutoff? >> the age of 2 is the cutoff. that's what my experience is. but it was funny because i was -- it was my first daughter, sabrina and i didn't want to see her cry. it was drama. >> and every time you take the pacifier away she would get hysterical. >> terrible. it was a bad experience for me. i start adding two pacifiers in the crib. so every 40 minutes you would have to go to the crib and put the pacifier in. so i ended up with 20 pacifiers in the crib. >> it's not a good thing. at two years old it's tough to communicate. how did you start to explain that we needed to wean off the pa pacifier. >> it was devine intervention and the desperate call of a mother at 3:00 a.m. i was in the crib and the baby

was crying and couldn't find the pacy and i said do you know why pacy is sad? because pacy misses his mommy. pacifier wants to go home. >> and she was like bin kirkski? >> yes, she lives in a castle. >> your brilliant. a little evil but brilliant. >> you and me apart would be terrible. >> and she bought this. >> she said to me, take binkie to binkie land. it was amazing. >> well done. >> and then i created the five steps that are in the book. >> which became this -- by the way, the illustrations in the book are wonderful and i know that's a hard thing for a first time author of a children's book to come up with the right illustrat illustrator. how did you do that? >> i'm very creative and it's like my hobby is paint and i did all of these illustrations so it

took me two years to find the right illustrator that would capture my essence and respect the castle, the lollipops, everything. i got that person and we created this magic kingdom and then the most important are the steps to help your kid getting rid of the pacy. what i think is its the first appearance of getting -- letting go. you know, for a human being it's very difficult to let go so for a baby it's terrible. so it's the first experience to let go and it's okay. >> great advice for parents. are you going to do more. >> yes. this is my fourth. this is the first child book and i'm very excited. >> congratulations. >> thank you so much. >> nice to have you here. the book is called chupie and we are recommending this for anyone going through this right now at home. we're back in a moment. this is "today" on nbc.

>> i tried. >> no shave november. a little bit of news to talk about at the top. that was a scary incident on friday at l.a.x. more details coming out about the tragic shooting death of a tsa agent at los angeles international airport. about 9:20 in the morning. you see video of people inside the terminal fleeing. paul ciancia of new jersey walked up to a tsa checkpoint, terminal three at l.a.x. using an assault rifle to shoot the tsa officer hernandez at point blank range. but when the officer appeared to move he returned to the lobby shooting him again. he shot a couple of tsa agents and a high school teacher. the suspect is in the hospital in critical condition. there's so many layers to this story. some sources saying he texted his brother saying he was going to commit suicide before the shooting. his father got wofrd of texts ad

called police. >> everybody did the right thing. >> they dropped him off and didn't suspect this was going to happen. it's really horrifying that once again, here we go again and the question this morning, you know, you think that you have all of these extra layers of security at the airports now but the question is -- there's always going to be a way to get in there. we were talking this morning, if you go to the baggage claim area that seems like a pretty easy way to walk right up. >> there are police. you'll see police or national guard patrolling the ticket areas and stuff. but are they going to start thinking about arming tsa agents. >> then it's a whole other layer. you have to train them. >> they're law enforcement. >> yeah. >> and some people are saying they should be armed but there are a ton of people armed in airports and this guy was confronted, too late, obviously because we lost the first tsa agent that's ever died in the line of duty since the agency was created in 2001 but he was confronted with gunfire and

suppressed. >> fortunately other police officers stepped in there and were real heros because it could have been much, much worse. >> yeah and this tsa officer was about to turn 40 this week and has a family. >> father. >> tragic, tragic story. here in new york city yesterday, the marathon went off without a hitch. that was good news amid heightened security less than 7 months after the bombings at the boston marathon. there were at least 1500 cameras positioned along the route. that's in addition to all the thousands that already existed in the city. >> record numbers. what is it? 50,740 runners this year. >> it was so cool to see everybody out on the plaza this morning all wrapped in the orange jackets they got after the race and a really inspiring moment as tatyana mcfadden won the women's wheelchair race completing her four marathons in a calendar year. she won four marathons. the boston marathon in april

good morning to you. 9:26. i'm laura garcia-cannon. san francisco police are investigating a crash that killed a person in a wheelchair overnight. it happened overnight in the city's hay's valley neighborhood. the victim, a man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the hospital. the driver stayed at the scene. it's unclear if he or she will face any charges. just three days ago the city turned on a camera system at that very intersection, which had the most injury collisions in san francisco two years ago. the parents of a 13-year-old shot by a sonoma county sheriffs deputy is holding a press conference this afternoon to talk about filing a civil rights lawsuit against the deputy and the county, claiming the shooting was unconstitutional. the lawsuit alleges the deputy

shot andy lopez without reasonable cause and that violated the boy's fourth amendment. almost two weeks ago, the deputy mistook the boy's replica rifle for an ak-47 and shot him seven times. deputy claims the boy started to point the replica at him, and he feared for his life. we're going to take a look at weather and traffic right after this break. sea grill downstairs at rockefeller plaza, a place we love and eat at all the time here with recipes to help us out. >> thank you very much for having me. >> let's start with the cauliflower and you use the whole thing? >> yes. we are going to easily break this down and in general, we just split them in half. >> do the different colors have different flavors? >> not really. they look beautiful. flavorful. they all are the same. wher going to actually take the cauliflower and save large stems for later for a little purpose that we're going to keep them raw and do the shaved salad aspect and we're going to take some of the smaller ones and then we're going to break them apart. so we're going to take the smaller pieces and basically take them apart because we have beautiful florets and we're going to use these to caramelize. >> an after that you take all of

these trimmings and we add it all together and we'll poach this in milk so it keeps the white color. once we actually put the cauliflower in until they're fork tender. when we bring up the milk, just make sure that the milk we skim off the top because cauliflower tends to give a little nice funk to it. we're going to try to take the funk off of it as soon as it comes to a boil. >> take the funk off. >> i love that. how long does that go in the milk? >> probably five minutes or so and once it's fork tender we use a knife and once it's cooked we take that and puree it in the blender and it's ready to go. >> and the scallops take almost no time, too. >> scallops are usually like less than a minute. everybody has that fear of like worrying about overcooking scallops but in this case it cooks really fast. nice hot pan. what we're going to do is some of the little pointers swer going to score them a little bit. >> it gives a nice good

presentation look and also speeds up the cooking a little bit as well without having the fact of overcooking it. so we are going to just briefly go ahead and score them up and then we're going to start off with a nice good hot pan, olive oil. >> people with get scallops about anywhere now can't they? >> pretty much. they're available all yearlong but what makes it is the season is starting up and a lot of varieties are coming up now and we're going to start them off. >> nice and dry? >> right. ideally you want it nice and dry until it caramelizes. >> oh my god. >> again, nice here. >> do you have a favorite kind of scallop? >> i do. my favorite starts off right now november 1st is actually the season. you can come and enjoy it at the restaurant as well. then we'll add butter. lots of butter. always a good thing.

take the garlic and mash that upright in there. and herbs and thyme. we'll easily get some color really fast. at this point, you want to just turn off the fire. >> wow, that smells good. >> we're just going to use that to baste and then that's it. the scallops are cooked within 45 seconds or so. then we're going to take these scallops right over here that are already cooked and put them on the side. we're going to change this up. and we're going to use the same pan to actually took the florets with. >> why don't we come back here? >> we use this and bring the scallops over. >> oh, yeah. >> it's the most important. and what we're going to do is this is the puree itself. right in the blender. we're going to use some of that itself. >> that's the cauliflower. >> so this is the sauce. >> and you also end up with these. >> with a beautiful dish. >> spectacular.

shot lopez without reasonable cause and that violated the boy's fourth amendment. almost two weeks ago, the deputy mistook the boy's replica rifle for an ak-47 and shot him seven times. the deputy claims the boy started to point the replica at him and he feared for his life. the convicted felon charged with killing federal investigator sandra coke will be in court this morning. he pleaded not guilty to her murder this month. while he says he's innocent, he admits to being at the motel where investigators believe coke was killed back in august. his gps ankle monitor indicated he was at the motel for 38 minutes on the night coke disappeared. he has 17 prior felony convictions and faces life in prison if convicted of coke's murder. we'll look at the forecast and the roads after the break.
